No letter is assigned (which is why it doesn't show up in Windows Explorer). Unaware of consequences, I just clicked Yes and then later I unplugged the hard drive, while the process was still going on (I guess it was). I'm sure you've been thinking as I have... You could have a try. I have avoided using my personal computer for months because of this problem. it was preformatted to FAT32 system. In Disk management you can see the device appear and the disappear every 30 seconds or so.
but I was happy to restore it. Sometimes you just deserve a smack :S Thanks for all the help.
